New Year's Eve 2012 and traditional Ball Drop in Times Square in New York

Traditional New Year's Eve in Times Square in New York this year, like every previous, will be accompanied by the traditional ball drop that will be decorated with green LEDs. The green color is selected in accordance with the new American energy standard that will take effect on 1st January 2012.

The company that provides light bulbs for the most famous ball in the world is Philips Lighting, and it will also be the case this year. 32,256 LEDs will decorate the ball while it drops. It represents the end of the old and the beginning of the new, hopefully better year.

Phillips is going to use this opportunity to promote their super energy-saving LED diodes which should replace conventional light bulbs. The new LEDs are called AmbientLED and they use only 12 watts of power instead of 60 watts which ordinary light bulbs use. The new bulbs use about 80 percent less energy than classic ones and they save customers’ money. Phillips says that if every American home exchanges the ordinary bulb with LEDs, they will save of up to 15.8 billion dollars annually.

Whether you attend a traditional ball drop in New York, or watch the whole spectacle on TV, you can be sure that year 2012 will be greener and more energy efficient.
