The Aral Sea and the abandoned ships

The Aral Sea (which is in fact a lake), located in Central Asia, was one of the largest lakes in the world. Why are we writing in the past tense?

It is simple - because the river that flowed into the lake and supplied it with water was diverted for irrigation. That reduced the total area of the lake for more than half. 95% of the nearby wetlands have become deserts, and over fifty delta lakes dried up.

This large lake has served as a buffer against extreme weather conditions in the area, so now the climate in this area is largely disturbed. Who knows maybe this lake will one day get its life back? Although, it is very likely that will not happen. Today there is a real biological disaster in that place. Plague, typhus and smallpox are very common.

These are some pictures of the lake, or sea, as some call it. Today it is nothing more than a sad and gloomy place.
