This lake is located in southeastern Siberia, and it covers 3.15 million acres of land. Lake Baikal is the oldest (25 million years) and deepest (5,577 feet) lake in the world. It contains about 20% of the world's non-frozen fresh water reserves. It is also known as "The Russian Galapagos". The lake produced one of the richest and most unusual freshwater fauna in the world because of its age and isolation.

It is surrounded by a range of protected areas which have great natural and scientific importance. The Russian government has come up a unique study in order to prevent increasing pollution of the lake.
