Hurricanes - seen from satellites

On Earth, hurricanes can be lethal. From space, look like works of art. The following nine pictures were photographed by astronauts on the International Space Station.

Hurricane Ivan from afar


This is an image of Hurricane Ivan, one of the most powerful ever recorded. The picture was taken on Saturday 11. September 2004. from a height of about 230 miles. A photo is snapped by scientific officer and NASA flight engineer Edward M. Fink's.

Center of Hurricane Ivan


Center of Hurricane Ivan, photographed together with solar cells of the International Space Station. Was also photographed from a height of about 230 miles. At that time, Ivan swept over the western Caribbean and reaching the wind power of about 160 miles per hour.

Ivan over the Gulf of Mexico

Hurricane Ike


Category 4. hurricane, called Ike, on the morning of 4th September seen from the International Space Station at an altitude of 215 miles. The storm was traveling west-northwest across the Atlantic creating winds strength from 130 to 170 miles per hour.

Hurricane Gordon

The view from the Space Shuttle Atlantis on 18 September 2006. By the time this photo was taken Gordon had a force of 90 - 110 miles per hour.

Hurricane Felix


Photo of Hurricane Felix was taken from the international space station by a member of Expedition 15, 3 September 2007. over the east coast of Honduras. Reaching a wind speed of up to 170 miles per hour puts him in the fifth category.

Hurricane Katrina


The picture shows Hurricane Katrina, and was taken by the members of the Expedition eight from the International Space Station 27. March 2004. Picture shows the hurricane that just approaching southern Brazil province Catherine.

Hurricane Wilma


Photo of the hurricane called Wilma took the crew of the International Space Station from a height of about 225 miles. At that time, Wilma was the strongest hurricane ever recorded, with winds that are blowing over 180 miles per hour. The storm "raging" in the Caribbean Sea, 340 miles from the city Kozumela in Mexico.
