10 unusual prisons around the world

Justizzentrum Leoben (Austria) - a five-star jail

Beautiful glass windows and the building of stainless steel ... Commercial? No! This is a five-star prison in Styria, Austria. If you analyze criminal activity in the U.S. and in Austria, you'll notice something unusual: although the U.S. crime rate is high in virtually every category (murder, rape, armed robbery, etc.), the Austrians "excel" in only one: burglary. But why? Why is the rate of burglaries in Austria a whopping 40% higher than in the U.S.? We’ll tell you: because these prisons in Austria are awesome.

Constipation Cebu (Philippines) - See famous prison dance

You've probably at least once on the Internet ran into some of the video clips recorded in Cebu jail. Their most famous dance "Thriller" has even appeared on the pages of Time magazine. Dancing is a part of the rehabilitation program in this prison. While most prisons allow offenders to walk, play basketball, lift weights this prison wanted to introduce another way of maintaining discipline. The warden was inspired by scenes from the movie "Shawshank Redemption" and he felt that music is the right way to do this. Sometimes, up to 1500 offenders take part in the dance which is great. They have performed at many charity events and raised exceptional amounts of money for those in need. The prison also organizes live performances, where the visitors can e be photographed with the prisoners and buy a souvenir T-shirts. It is interesting, indeed!

Jail San Pedro (Bolivia) - a place where inmates buy their cells

San Pedro prison, the largest prison in the capital of Bolivia - La Paz, is a home to about 1,500 prisoners. At first glance, it seems like any other prison, however, when you pass the thick walls and security gates, any resemblance to the ordinary prison disappears. Children's playground, market stalls, restaurants, hairdressers and even a hotel! It looks like El Alto, a poor suburb in Bolivia, and not like a real jail. No guards, no uniforms, no metal bars on the windows. This partial freedom has a price: inmates must pay for their cells, and therefore have to work inside the prison - to sell food, grow plants etc.. One prisoner said: "If you have money, you can live like a king." You can even buy accommodation in the "luxury" section of the prison. There the cells are wide, with separate bathrooms, a kitchen and cable TV! There are places in the prison where you can play pool, there is a kiosk with fresh fruit and vegetables, juices and other food. Cells cost from 1500 - 2000 dollars and you buy them for a certain period - or for the entire time the inmate is in prison. In the poorer sections, the inmates have to share a small cell.

Kresty Prison (Russia) – the most overcrowded prison in the world

Russian prisons have a reputation for being interesting – and overcrowded! A special Kresty Prison in St. Petersburg is an example. The official capacity is 3000, but almost always there are about 10,000 prisoners. Every prisoner has only 4 square meters of space and has a shower once a week! Putin said last summer that the prison will be moved to another location, in a larger facility on the outskirts of a city. After the relocation is completed, the entire building should be sold, and in its place hotel complex will be built.

Constipation Sark (Gernzi) - the smallest prison in the world

Sark prison is located on the island of Sark in Gernzi. It was built in 1856. and is currently the smallest of its kind in the world. You can barely fit two prisoners for a night. If it is determined that the penalty should be higher, they are then sent to a real jail with corridors, cells and staff.

ADX (Colorado) - super-maximum imprisonment provided

Facility for maximum punishment in the United States is in fact a prison with a super-maximum security and is located in Florence, Colorado. This is literally - the last prison. Since it was opened in 1994, this place is nothing but a place of slow and inhumane torture. Inmates are allowed to leave their cells only 9 hours per week and can barely communicate with anyone. The cells themselves have almost no sunlight. Meals are served in the cells. Rooms are generally made of concrete, with built-in furniture which cannot be moved. Toilets stop working if someone tries to clog them; showers operate on a timer to prevent possible leakage and flooding. This prison was designed for the worst offenders that world has ever seen.

Constipation Aranjuez (Spain) - prison with "pleasant" family cells

We can say that this is the only “family” prison in the world. With Disney characters on the walls, it is a playground for children ... The idea is that children are with their parents (convicts) while they are still very small and unaware of their surroundings, and also that they have a sense of parenting and caring. It is located about 24 miles south of Madrid, it has 36 "family" cells, of which only 16 are occupied largely by Latin Americans. Special units in this prison are marked with F-1 and are popular among the prisoners as "cells with five stars."

Poorly secured prison on the island Bastoy (Norway) - the first ecological prison

Although some people are guilty of some terrible crimes against humanity, there is still a chance to do something good for others in this first ecological prison in the world. Although the idea of environmentally friendly prisons is not widely accepted, Norway first attempted with the experimental design. Their poorly secured prison on the island Bastoy uses solar panels for energy; it produces food, recycles almost everything, and tries to reduce emissions to a minimum. With solar panels, power consumption is reduced by 70%. The inmates in this prison produce food for their needs. If they produce more than they need, the rest of the food is sold to other prisons. Marked as an island of hope, the prison received international media attention because of living conditions - the summer camps that are organized here, a lot of sport activities among the prisoners - tennis, horseback riding, etc., and they were allowed to go swimming in summer, when the North Sea is warm.

Constipation Ceresco Chetumal (Mexico) - a place where inmates solve their own problems by boxing

Constipation Ceresco is unique in the world - this is the place where there was no violence for ten years, a place where prisoners have an excellent artistic program and they create various works that are subsequently sold to tourists. As officials said, when it comes to a dispute, the prisoners pick up gloves and go into the ring. After two rounds the differences are settled. There are 1100 prisoners and many of them say that they don’t want to leave this comfortable life inside: an exceptional menu of cultural activities which includes both men and women plus special VIP cells.

Alcatraz Island (Calif.) - the most famous prison in the world

Alcatraz Island, often referred to Alcatraz or just Rock, is located on a small island in the Bay of San Francisco, California. First it served as a lighthouse, then as a military fortification, then a military prison, and finally as a federal prison until 1963. Today the island is treated as historic place under the control of the National Park Service Golden Gate Bridge, and it is open to tourists. The prison has successfully worked for 29 years and no one managed to escape from it.
